Stagefright Detector App for Android Devices
Zimperium zLabs expert and VP of Platform Research and Exploitation, Joshua Drake (@jduck) discovered multiple critical vulnerabilities in the Stagefright library and provided patches to Google to secure Android. These patches were then distributed to carriers and vendors through Zimperium Handset Alliance (ZHA). Although the patches have been applied, it may take several years for them to reach all devices.
Zimperium zLabs has developed a Detector app that verifies whether your device is running a version that is vulnerable to the identified Stagefright vulnerabilities. Some phone vendors have released partial patches for the disclosed vulnerabilities, and this app can help you determine if your device is at risk.
Stagefright is a critical Android vulnerability. It allows hackers to gain 'media' or 'system' privileges on your device simply by processing an incoming MMS message or browsing the web through one of 11 potential attack vectors. In many cases, no end-user action is required. To make matters worse, the attacker can delete the MMS before you even open it.
To check if your device is vulnerable, we have designed the 'Stagefright Detector' app.
This app provides you with three essential pieces of information:
- Whether your device is vulnerable
- The CVEs (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) that your device is vulnerable to
- Whether you need to update your mobile operating system
Stay protected: ZIMPERIUM Mobile Threat Protection enterprise customers, vendors, and carriers are safeguarded against the Stagefright vulnerability without requiring any special updates.
This application anonymously collects test results and shares them with device vendors and carriers through ZHA. We do not collect any personal information.
Carriers and device vendors interested in joining the Zimperium Handset Alliance to enhance the security of their user base can join here: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/zimperium-handset-alliances.
